Nederlands Dans Theatre 3 proves the fact that dance is not just for the young and super-fit. The dancers are all over the age of forty and have won wide acclaim for their performances of works created specially for them by some of Europe's leading choreographers. These five dances from their repertoire make full use of their experience, skill and maturity. Ageing, time and maturity are themes which recur in three of the dances. The pieces may be acquired separately or combined in a mixed bill. OBSCURE TEMPTATIONS Choreographed by Jií Kylián's and set to John Cage's Sonata 14 & 15 for Prepared Piano and Thomas Oboe Lee's Morango... almost a Tango, this piece features Sabine Kupferberg, Jeanne Solan and Gary Chryst. Obscure, certainly, but nonetheless compelling, Kupferberg's sustained solo of a dancer who re-lives her past in a random series of flashbacks, is a mysterious narrative, whilst Solan and Chryst play two manipulative angels. (15') OFF WHITE Choreographer Ohad Naharin's work is set to the lyrical Strauss waltz, Rosen aus dem Suden. Danced with great humour and tenderness by Sabine Kupferberg and Niklas Ek, this piece provides a tragicomic portrait of a married couple. It is set on a square of white canvas, which could be a bed, a trampoline or a wrestling ring. (11') NOCTURNE Martha Clarke's moving solo Nocturne, set to Mendelssohn's Lieder ohne Worte, Op.38, No. 6 in A flat major, is danced by Sabine Kupferberg. She is seen as an aged ballerina - literally a dying swan. In a half-length tutu, her face covered by a veil with holes cut out for the eyes, she is poignantly naked above the waist and dances with painful infirmity, evoking memories of her former grace. Finally, she can dance no more. (9') SUSTO This short work by choreographer Paul Lightfoot - a more light- hearted allusion to the passing of time - is danced by Sabine Kupferberg, Gary Chryst, Gérard Lemaître and Gerald Tibbs, to the first movement of Beethoven's Symphony No.5 in C minor. An hour-glass runs with sand throughout the choreography, streaming on to the dance floor and forming the focus of the dancers' attention. Finally, they revert to childhood and play like kids in a sand pit. (12') DIFFERENT PARTNERS The barre is a vital and time-consuming factor in a dancer's life and, because of this, Hans van Manen was inspired to create Different partner for Monique Janotta. She dances with Gary Chryst in this work set to Stravinsky's Duo Concertant for Violin and Piano
