Las mujeres que vivieron en el Occidente romano durante los tres primeros siglos de nuestra era fueron protagonistas de un mecenazgo cívico que provocó cambios en el modelo tradicional de la civitas. La impronta de las mujeres en la arquitectura urbana, la feminización de las relaciones cívicas, la transformación de la imagen e identidad de las ciudades y el ejercicio de poder económico, social y cívico desplegado por las mujeres en las ciudades constituyó un proceso tan singular que necesita un concepto propio, el de matronazgo, para ser reconocido en la historia
