'Wine vat witches suffocate...
The emergence of diabolical witchcraft in the Iberian Peninsula has received little historiographical attention, partly due to the lack of records from the 15th century. After a research into the rich Catalan archives, new material has come to light. This material allows us to assess the development of the witch-hunts in the Pyrenean area from its surprisingly early mentions around 1420 to the systematic persecutions during Early Modern times. In this article, we carry out an analysis of the mythical components of the Iberian witch figure, originally formulated in the Catalan area and later adopted in the northern kingdoms of the Iberian Peninsula
La aparición de la brujería diabólica en la Península Ibérica ha recibido una atención limitada por parte de la historiografía, debido en parte a la ausencia de fuentes para el siglo XV. A raíz de una investigación en los ricos archivos catalanes llevada a cabo durante la elaboración de nuestra tesis doctoral, hemos podido sacar a la luz nuevo material documental. Este hecho nos permite aproximarnos al desarrollo de la caza de brujas en el área pirenaica desde las precoces menciones alrededor de 1420 hasta las persecuciones sistemáticas en época moderna. En el presente artículo analizamos los componentes míticos de la figura de la bruja Ibérica, formulada por primera vez en el área catalana y adoptada posteriormente en los reinos del norte peninsular
