Addressing adoptive relationships using adoption-specific therapy

"In this session, Dr. Jill Waterman explicates and applies adoption-specific therapy with a middle-aged African American woman who legally adopted her biological granddaughter at birth. After providing an overview of the session, Waterman assesses the client's presenting issue. The client shares that she is concerned about her 10-year-old adopted granddaughter's disruptive and disrespectful behaviors with adults in school, in the community, and at home. Next, Waterman gathers information regarding the adoption history, learning that the client adopted her biological daughter's child. The client's daughter (the adoptee's biological mother) coparents the adoptee, but she does not reside in the client's home. In addition, the client reveals that the adopted child does not know she has been legally adopted by her grandmother, but she does not question why she lives with her grandmother, not her biological mother. Soon after, Waterman describes seven modules of the adoption-specific therapy approach while evaluating the suitability of interventions to the client's situation. Waterman then guides the client in identifying her adopted granddaughter's strengths. Finally, Waterman assigns homework to the client and briefly describes the course of treatment should they continue to work together."
