During the nineteenth century, Chile and Argentina had several border disputes, both over the Strait of Magellan and Patagonia, which concluded with the Boundary Treaty of 1881. However, these problems emerged again in the austral zone and increased tension in the 1890s, when nationalism and the arms race were mixed up with the boundary issue. Therefore, our research question is: Why did the Chilean-Argentinian dispute increase if there were a treaty and a protocol in force during that decade? For this, the objectives are to: 1) evaluate unresolved limit points between both states; and 2) comprehend the nationalism and arms race atmosphere of that period. A methodology of document source analysis using archives, books, period press, and a historical-geopolitical approach within a defined time frame (1892-1999) will be utilized in this study. The results aim to demonstrate that both states, despite their agreements, sought to hasten the resolution of controversies by engaging not only state institutions but also society as a whole
Durante o século XIX, o Chile e a Argentina discutiram muitas vezes pelos seus limites, tanto pelo Estreito de Magalhães quanto pela Patagônia, questão que terminou com o Tratado de Limites de 1881. No entanto, estes problemas apareceram novamente na região austral e incrementar m as tensões na década de 1890, quando os limites se misturaram com o nacionalismo e o armamentismo. Por isso, nossa pergunta é: Por que aumentou a discussão chileno-argentina se existiam um tratado e protocolo em vigor nessa década? Os nossos objetivos são: 1) avaliar os pontos limítrofes não resolvidos entre ambos estados; e 2) compreender o clima de nacionalismo e armamentismo da época. Isto será feito mediante uma metodologia de análise de fontes documentais (arquivos, livros, imprensa da época) e um enfoque histórico-geopolítico, em uma dimensão temporal definida (1892-1899). As conclusões visam demonstrar que ambos estados, não obstante seus acordos, buscaram pressionar por uma rápida solução de controvérsias não só envolvendo as instituições estatais, senão que a sociedade como um todo
Chile y Argentina discutieron en torno al Estrecho de Magallanes y la Patagonia en varias ocasiones durante el siglo XIX. El Tratado de Límites de 1881 cierra un ciclo. No obstante, las disputas territoriales se incrementaron con perspectivas nacionalistas y un creciente armamentismo en la década siguiente. Por qué se intensificaron las disputas si existía un tratado y un protocolo vigentes? Es la pregunta central del presente artículo, partiendo de la evaluación de los puntos limítrofes entre ambos Estados. La investigación se llevará a cabo mediante una metodología de análisis de fuentes documentales (archivos, libros, prensa de la época) y un enfoque histórico-geopolítico, en una dimensión temporal definida (1892-1899). Las conclusiones proponen demostrar que, a pesar de los acuerdos existentes, ambos Estados intentaron presionar por una solución rápida a las controversias, involucrando no solo a las instituciones del Estado, sino también a la sociedad en su conjunto
